What are Cellular Shades?

Examples of different cell sizes.

Cellular Shades (also known as honeycomb shades) are made from two or more layers of fabric fused together to create the unique “honeycomb” design that you see when viewing the shade from the side. Cellular Shades offer protection from harmful UV rays, a compact stacking height and complete privacy/light control.

Cellular Core

Cellular Shades feature an open air design in the middle which traps air making it more difficult for cool/warm air to transfer from one side of the shade to the other. This unique characteristic allows the shade to keep the interior cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Double Cell fabrics are more energy efficient than Single Cell fabrics because you have the added protection of another cell which helps to cool/warm the trapped air to room temperature.

This window was photographed using thermal photography to distinguish temperature zones indicated by the blue, orange and yellow colors that you see. In the first photo (left) the window is uncovered and the blue indicates the level of temperature loss. The second photo (right) shows the same window covered with a double cell shade. Notice the color gradation from blue to green to yellow. The warmer colors indicate a temperature increase due to the inherent insulating effect of the cellular fabric.

R-Value indicates the level to which insulating material like cellular fabric, can resist heat flow. The greater the R-value, the greater the insulating power. Therefore, using that simple formula, we can see that double cell fabric performs better than single cell and blackout fabric performs better than light filtering fabric.

Cellular Fabrics are the most versatile fabrics available in the window covering industry. Until cellular shades came along you could not cover your arched windows with the same material and in the same colors that you used to cover your patio door or your skylights. It made color coordinating your living room or your kitchen an absolute nightmare. Cellular Shades changed that because the cellular fabric can be used to cover nearly every type of window opening. In addition to the aesthetics and versatility, the cellular fabric also provides a greater level of energy efficiency than your typical slatted blind or fabric roller/roman shade.
